Restoration of Vanguard
New Life as a Max Level ArchmageVivi’s reopening of Vanguard begins with a door that has been closed for a century and becomes a choice about what the guild should be in a world that has outlived its old heroes. Inside, its rooms and insignia remain intact, but its membership and rank have been stripped away. A System-granted Mythic quest offers a first route back. Rather than trying to recreate her former party, Vivi resolves to rebuild Vanguard as a public force whose resources can serve others.
The Door Reopens
At the Vanguard Guildhall, Rafael raised an eyebrow in silent inquiry. Vivi answered by casting an illusion that concealed the door as she pulled it open. The guildhall yielded. She suspected Rafael had already recognized her as the real Sorceress, not an illusionist impersonating her, but recognition could not make the moment ordinary: the building had been closed for a century, and opening it stirred excitement in her as well as reverence in him.
The interior was larger than the exterior suggested, a feature of the guild system carried into this world by the System. In Seven Cataclysms, upgrading a guild expanded its interior without requiring a correspondingly larger building or plot of land. That design had served a practical purpose in a game crowded with guilds; here, its rules still shaped a real place. Vanguard, however, had been a private group of five friends, and its rooms reflected that intimacy rather than their standing among the game’s top players.
A short foyer led to a compact common room furnished with comfortable chairs around a fireplace. Above the mantel hung Vanguard’s insignia: a torch burning with gold fire. The room had been preserved by magic, not by a caretaker’s ongoing work. Despite the century of closure, there was no dust, decaying wood, or stale smell. Rafael surveyed the undisturbed room with visible reverence and remarked that he had wondered whether he would ever enter the building again. The intact furnishings made the reopening feel less like entering a ruin than returning to a place suspended in time.
A Guild Preserved, Then Reset
The preservation of the room did not mean the guild itself had survived unchanged. A parchment pinned to a notice board presented a System-granted Mythic quest, titled The Restoration of Vanguard, Stage One. Its description recalled that the guild had shepherded the world through seven earth-rending Cataclysms before lying dormant for nearly a hundred years, its treasures lost with it. It cast Vivi as the returning remnant of that organization, while acknowledging that what had been lost could not always be recovered and that new dangers might still come.
The first task was specific: locate one former Vanguard craftsman and induct that person back into the guild. Completing it would raise Vanguard from tier zero to tier one and restore access to the Craftsmen Quarters. The quest also promised that an item harvested from the Umbral Regent would be reforged into a level-2000 relic with no level requirement. Rafael recognized the quest’s Mythic rating; Vivi initially found the recruitment task modest by comparison with the rewards.
The reward did not erase their concerns. In the office, Rafael checked the guild’s records and found that he remained registered as steward and Vivi as guildmaster, but everyone else had been removed. The craftsmen were not listed, the guild had indeed reverted to tier zero, and Rafael’s records had vanished. He judged the reset less a destruction than a restriction: the structure remained, and the locked Craftsmen Quarters would reopen when a former member returned. The distinction mattered. Vanguard had not been erased, but its past could not simply be retrieved from the building’s preserved rooms.
Choosing Whom to Restore—and What to Build
When Vivi asked who might best fulfill the quest, Rafael separated practical access from confidence in loyalty. Malach and Miraelle seemed easiest to contact; Eshara was the surest choice in terms of loyalty. Vivi intended to speak with all of them eventually. The first recruitment therefore offered a concrete opening, but it also raised the larger question of whether restoration meant gathering the old circle or reshaping the organization.
Vivi did not expect to restore her former party. Rafael agreed that the five-member group’s exceptional combination of talent would not recur. Instead, she proposed opening Vanguard’s doors to the public, bringing it back to prominence, and using its influence and resources for good. Its treasures, she said, were not things she intended to hoard. Rafael reinforced the practical logic: assets were best leveraged, not locked away.
He described her plan as a rise from the ashes, with Vanguard spreading its influence and reclaiming its glory in a different form: a proper guild and a beacon of virtue, as Eshara had imagined. Vivi accepted the direction while resisting his grander phrasing. Her decision was not to restore the old group unchanged, but to make the guild’s inherited resources useful beyond its original circle. In that sense, the first quest’s single-member requirement served as a threshold: one returning craftsman could unlock a portion of the past, while the institution’s future depended on a wider choice.
A Return Against the Shadow of Another Cataclysm
Vanguard’s reopening takes place in a world celebrating a century of peace from the Cataclysms. The Party of Heroes had defeated the seventh and final Cataclysm at great cost; all but The Sorceress perished. The Peace Day Festival commemorated the hundred years since those horrors, even as the destruction wrought by the Flesh-Weaver, the Reaper of the Lost Harvest, and the Ashen Hierophant remained part of the world’s history. The guild’s own quest echoed that uneasy interval: its first stage celebrated a return, but warned that nightmares could remain and that the world would still need a Vanguard.
That warning gives the reopening more than a nostalgic purpose. When Vivi later displays power on a scale that makes observers think a god has appeared, her return—and Vanguard’s—can no longer be understood as a simple revival of a historic guild. The building offers continuity through its untouched hearth and golden torch; the quest offers a managed first step; Vivi’s public-facing decision gives that continuity a new purpose. The past is present in the room, but the restoration is directed toward dangers and responsibilities that have not yet taken shape.
